Be the change.

Day #5

Today’s devotion can very easily relate to yesterdays post on obedience. I say that because God has not called us to be lukewarm in our faith. He has called us to be different, to be the change we want to see. Yet we live in a society where we get comfortable with where we are at in life. We want change but are afraid to be the one to step out and be the change.

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” – Romans 12:2

Did you know that there is an actual fear of change? I didn’t know that until I read todays devotion, this fear is called neophobia. Why are we afraid of change? Is it because we don’t want to be the ones to be the change? If we want to see change we must first be the change. We are not called to be the same and to be apart of this world, in fact we are told to stay away from the things of this world.

1 John 2:15-17 says, “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world – the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does. – comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.”

1 John 2:15-17 reassures us that we are not to conform to the world. Which can also relate back to the post about replacing God with other things. These verses again show that the things we are around on earth will pass with time and if we stay with the things of the world, we will not inherit the Kingdom of God. Jarrid Wilson says, “ we can’t expect to look any different than the world while we continue to bathe in the same junk as it.” It’s so true what he says and what the Bible says in 1 John, how can you expect to look different if you are consumed by the world? You cant.

In many ways our change can be tied closely to obedience to The Lord. If we obey what God wants for us then we can actively pursue change in our lives. We can be able to step off our boat, our comfort zone, and set change in motion in our daily lives and to be the change we want to see.

Do you want to see this change we are talking about but are afraid to step up and be the change? If so, I encourage you to earnestly pray about it. Ask and you shall receive. God is waiting to help you, He will provide for you! Don’t be discouraged by this world where we want change but don’t want to be the change. Be the change. Be different.

  1. As I sat reading the pieces from Romans and then John I found myself saying out loud, yes, yes. What we are has to die and then be reborn. And what comes, is but a shadow of what was. We are transformed into an instrument of His divine will. Wanting only to serve and to share what He has given us.
By His grace alone, do the desires of the world fall to the wayside. Without deprivation , the worlds sparkle… fizzles. Nothing but Him can any longer keep our attention. We become attracted to Him as a moth is drawn to a light bulb. He is ours and we are His.
The change we so earnestly seek in the world has to first start, in our own heart.
