Becoming holy isn’t easy

Holiness

I am called to be holy…but let’s be honest. Living out a holy life seems impossible. 1 Thessalonians 4:7 says “For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.” Why is it that God has called us to a task that is so hard.  We understand that we are sinful and that we will always be sinful until Christ returns again. We want to ask “how can God call me to be holy and yet also say that I can never achieve true holiness because I will always be sinful?”  Or we will say “I’ve tried to stop sinning and tried to be holy but it always falls through.”

This is where I think we get things a little mixed up…

1) Yes, we are called to live holy lives (Romans 12:1 “therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God…”)

2) We are sinful (Romans 3:22-23 “…There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God)

BUT that doesn’t mean that we still should not strive for holiness.  We are not asked to be perfect.  God knows that we can never achieve that status as only He is perfect but He still calls us to strive for holiness regardless.  Many like to think that “well if we can never be perfect, and I have already accepted Christ as my Lord and Savior than it doesn’t matter what I do or how i live.”  Paul answers this very statement in Romans 6:1-2 “What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?”

Okay so we get that we are supposed to be holy and should not live however we feel like but the big question still remains…HOW do we do that?

How can we ever truly live holy lives.  See, the things is, we have to understand that it is not us that can do it.  We are told scripturally that our deeds are as filthy rags and that works cannot save us.  I think to answer the question of how can be answered in 2 Timothy 1:8-9 “…by the power of God, who saved us and called us to a holy life-not because of anything we have done but because of His own purpose and grace.  This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time” We can be holy because God has the power to make us holy.  God to our sinful dead lives and resurrected us, surely if we pray and seek the Lord He is graceous and loving and powerful enough to bring us holiness.  So the answer is…Seek God and Ask for holiness.
